A Work Life Balance – Is it Possible?

A Work Life balance is something that many of us strive towards throughout our adult years. We want to be able to have a balance between the two and be able to shut off from one when it is time to focus on the other. There are those who have been able to find the balance and live successfully between the two.  However it is not always something that we can easily achieve. There are a number of reasons why we may struggle with the success of a work life balance.

High Expectations

We tend to put high expectations on ourselves and at times this can hinder our goals and achievements. When it comes to a work life balance a lot of people seem to have the expectation of the balance being an equal 50/50 split. It sounds like it is the best option right? In an ideal work than yes, an equal split would be perfect, however, this is very unlikely. Setting your expectations at a more reasonable level will help you to be able to achieve your goals and maintain balance.

When setting your goals around your ideal work life balance you need to ensure that you are also factoring in that there will be times when it needs to be varied, or things just simply do not go to plan. There may be times when your children are sick and you need to take time off work, or you have an important deadline that you need to achieve; resulting in needing to put more hours into your work for a few weeks. Ensuring that you are prepared for variation, will assist in keeping you on track and calm.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to creating your work life balance. What works for one person and their family, may not work for you and your family. The concept of a work life balance is defined as finding a common ground between both your work and personal life. Managing both means that you can enjoy and achieve in both areas. So how an you approach creating this successful work life balance?

Decide on your goals

Firstly you need to determine exactly what your goals are when you think about your work and personal life. Ask yourself

  • What do I want to achieve from it?
  • How much time do I want to dedicate to my work, your family, your social life.

Knowing exactly what you want, will help you to manage the different tasks in your work and personal life. It will set the expectation that you have time focus on work when necessary and then allow you to  put work aside when you want to dedicate time to your family or friends.

Ask for assistance

A lot of the time, we as adults are stubborn. We want to be able to do everything ourselves and believe that we can do it all on our own. Yes, we probably could do it all but when there is help around – take up the chance to ask for help. Delegate jobs at work, share the household tasks between you and your partner and let the grandparents babysit when they ask to – everyone loves time with the grandparents 😊

Track your achievements

Being able to see your achievements will help you to be able to stick to your plan and maintain the balance. If you are seeing the positive effects like relationships flourishing, goals being achieved and you and the people around you happy, then you are on the right track.

A successful work life balance takes time to achieve and you may need to swap and change parts of it until you have found a plan that works for you. Just remember not to give up or get disheartened. It can be achieved and once you put your mind to it, there is no stopping you. The balance will change the way you look at life and bring a positive feeling to you and those around you.
